They generally fall into two categories: 1. services provided to a data center or 2. services provided from a data center. A data center is a facility composed of networked computers and storage that businesses or other organizations It centralizes an organization’s shared IT operations and equipment for use to organize, process, store and disseminate large amounts of data. What is a server? A server “serves” information to the computers that connect to it. When users connect to a server they can access programs, files and other server information. On the web, a web server is a computer that uses the http protocol to send web pages to a user's computer when the user requests them. Support services include technical support to help solve problems related to technology products. Technical consulting services provide expertise and input to help organizations make strategic decisions and systems integrations Outsourcing occurs when one company (the outsourcing customer) contracts with an outsourcing vendor to get the services they need. Examples could be disaster recovery, data storage or other IT functions. Application services providers make up a large segment of business that provide software-based services to other companies that access those services over a network. Examples of ASP services include Web hosting and e-mail hosting. You may recall Ash talking about this when he said we would control the gates for hosting and email by defining what “spam” is on our own network. Application services can also include any service that helps companies develop, integrate or manage applications for their own networks. Why do we need data centers? We need Data centers because they are controlled environments where servers are kept. They are essentially temperature and humidity-controlled environments allowing machines perform at desired or optimum efficiency levels.
